[4] Saturday March 30th 1862
On the 30th day of March 1862 Prest. Dame brought my letter of appointment dated the 26th Inst. He had a little dinner at our house and instructed me a little about the keeping of my journal when I might have to travel from day to day. On the Saturday morning I told my master, I. Lindley (?) that I believed I was going to leave him. He asked me where I was going? I told him that I was going out to preach the gospel, call upon people to repent of their sins and be baptized for the remission of the same. He was somewhat surprised and in his mind disturbed because of the short notice that I had give [sic] him. But nevertheless he was glad in one sense of the word but very sorrow in another. He said we had been more like companions than journeyman (?) and master, --hoped my time was being [margin note: "Give Mr. Lindley a 'Book of Mormon'"] [5] sacrificed to a good cause; desired that I might prosper and be enabled to do much good. If ever I had any need to work any more all I had to do was to apply; invited me to tea with him which I accepted-talked about matters-spoke with regard to Bro. Dame; he did not know or expect; or did he believe that there was such good venerable looking men amongst the Latter-day Saints. I left with the peace and blessing of himself, wife, and family.
As President Dame had told me to meet Bro. Kay at 123 Oldfield Road, early in the morning, I spent the greatest part of the evening in seeing the Saints. Gained their blessings, good wishes, and prayers, for which I felt very thankful as their faith and prayers was all I desired.
[6] Sunday March 31st 1862, Oldham
Enjoyed a good night's rest, got breakfast, and myself ready to start out upon my new career. And with the blessing of Father, Mother, sisters and Saints, I left home in company with Bro. Thomas Pitts and James ???. But bye and bye we parted and left me to travel alone.
I arrived to Prest. Kay about 8:30 a.m. He was enjoying his breakfast. After a little instruction we went to Victoria Station 9:30 a.m. and book[ed] for Oldham. While on our journey he give me some instruction about keeping my accounts so that I should not be lost in the act of my income and expenditure. Advised me to get these thing[s] in a good moving order. [7] Arrived at Oldham, took dinner with Sister Ashworth's in Beck Grove Street.
At the meeting by half past two when quite a number of Saints and strangers was present. After the sacrament was administered President Kay arose and give some good instruction concerning the sacrament, desired the Saints should feel free and have good feelings towards each other, heal each others' weaknesses, strengthen each other['s] infirmities, and the Lord will bless you.
Some of the Brethren bore their testimony to the truth and desired to do more good. The meeting closed with prayer from Prest. Kay. Had tea together at Brother Gledhill's, attended meeting at 6 p.m. [8] Opened by singing, prayer from Elder Kay. He desired me to speak a short time. Exhorted the Saints to diligence in keeping the commandments of God, and those who where emigrating, for them to get within them the good spirit that they might have patience to overcome every evil that might beset there hath [???]. President Kay occupied the remaining portion of the time, taught the good principles of the gospel while a good and kind spirit prevailed the whole assembly. Singing and closed with prayer from myself. We went to see Gledhill's family as there were 4 going from their house this summer to the Valley, he give them instruction about the journey, the country, etc., and retired to our lodgings where I had a little supper with Sister Ashworths. He instructing me about good things, desired me to be careful and not oppress the Saints, but be good, kind, and affectionate to all. We received the report of the Middleton Branch. Rode [?] down to Manchester, stayed a while expecting letters from his family. As there was none came we rode to Ashton and found all the Saints that was going to the Valley preparing for their journey. I had tea at Bro. Lee's who was the President of the branch and for the first time; we slept together at Sister Woolfenden's.

Visited Bro. Lee of Ashton, and attended meeting at 8 p.m. I spoke a little to the Saints, after which Bro. Kay give them some good encouragement. Advised the Saints to be careful on their journey. Especially the young sisters, ??? them not to be led astray by any evil disposed persons. But stick true to their religion, true to their God and one another and good would be the result. Prayer from myself. We retired to Sister Woolfenden's where we had supper, and lodgings.

Walker to get the report of the Manchester Branch but did not get it, so I was obliged to go away without getting that which I was sent for. Went to Bro. Owen's, took dinner with him and returned to 123. Made preparations for Prest. John M. Kay going to Liverpool who departed for St. Hellen by the 7:15 p.m. train, returned to Bro. Arrived at Halghmoor by eight o'clock, had little practice with Bro. James Eckersley upon the violin, and supper with him and slept with Bro. Lacrish Hollows (???) and had breakfast [April 6th, Tyldesley] with him, moved on visiting the Prest. of the branch Bro. Fogg and the Saints. Arrived at Heelises with their star (???) I managed to find my way to the Streetgate Chapel, where I for the first time visited the grave of my Bro. Found the Saints at meeting. Enjoyed a good time. Had tea with Bro. Owen at 6 p.m. Meeting commenced when I for about 35 minutes addressed them, there being Saints and strangers present.

Enos Rays. Bro. Walsh procured my lodgings, at a very respectable place. Evening came and I returned to the Prest. of the Branch, company together to my house, when him and the family fell in discussion together. After his departure it fell to my lot to speak a little to them, and I felt to avail my [16] self of the opportunity. February 20th 1861] John Lythgoe and John Booth did not stop in Salt Lake, only two days, then went to the gold mines in California, or Western Utah, and according to reports, got killed by the Indians, before they arrived at [18] their destination they promised to write to me, but I have never received any letter. And if they have not wrote to their parents they may be sure that they never will. The Indians have massacred a great many on that route between Salt Lake and Carson Valley last season. And they went with too small a company, only 3 wagons, and they were advised not to go. It would have been well if they would have obeyed. I had dinner with them, and in company with Bro. J. Jones (???), pursued my journey to Halghmoor, had tea with Sister Stones, and visited most of the Saints, at meeting 7:30 seven when a goodly number of Saints and strangers was present. I got out the Star parcels, and was quite busy all day with my brethren. Prest. Kay informed me that Bro. Dame was released to go home. This was rather strange to me, as I had expected him to have been my instructor for some time. But his health being not good, it was deemed wisdom to release him. He said if there was mistakes in the body it was not his heart but his head. I hope that I may be able to do my work as well as Bro. Dame. Had supper with Sister Scoles, and lodgings.

A goodly number of Saints and some friends was present. Meeting closed and I made my way to Bro. Dame at 123. As he was going home the morning following, we sat and lay in bed talking until the clock [struck?] one and we fell asleep. Attended meeting at 8 p.m. when about 8 in number was present. The branch numbering about 24. I spoke some time to them, exhorting them to faithfulness. The meeting closed with prayer from myself.
I knew not as yet where I was going to lodge, but Bro. Connell and me came together to his house. He did not know where I must be all night. Sister Morriss had asked me to sleep at their house, but I rather declined on account of her husband working in the night. But however they managed with much trouble to make me one along 5 chairs where I slept for some time during the night.
[31] April 24, Clayton
Arose from my uneasy bed about 6 a.m. and washed myself, and attended to breakfast at Sister Morris's. Had a pretty good talk with Bro. Morris during the forenoon about emigration. Had dinner with him. He told me some good truths about his brother Joseph who is the false prophet of Deseret. Said he was a man that was very headstrong and a little insane sometimes, and was of a jealous disposition.
After dinner, I made my way to through Ashton and along to Clayton. Arrived at Bro. Wardle's when to my surprise and astonishment I met with Pres. Lyman and Bro. Kay seated in Bro. Wardle's. He said things was very slack in the Branch; the Saints did not come up to their duty. Arrived at Oldham, tea with Bro. James Gledhill. I expected to have found the report at his house but he had never heard anything about any report. Said that there was 2 spirits in the Branch. Party Spirit existed with them, and that a good feeling did not prevail. How it was he could not tell. We went together to Samuel Hart. He then departed home. Bro. Hart and me went to Mosley, found the Branch Prest. and got report. I was then called outside as they had something to tell me. They had difficulties with Elder Js. Gledhill and desired to understand how [36] they must deal with him. There was being a council on Sunday next and ??? home of the ministry to be present. I said I would tell Prest. Kay and for them ask his council. Supper and retired to bed.
April 29, Mosley
Arose by 6:30 a.m. Had breakfast and made my journey to Ashton. It was a fine summer's morning. It was beautiful to behold the splendid signery which presented itself before my view, the Yorkshire hills on each side surrounded with the fields green with grass and the young heifers grazing beneath the loftiest hills in Lancashire(?), there being stone walls instead of grown fencing. It being a road that I had never before traveled, I knew not which way to look for home, it being situated 4 miles distant from the town of Oldham. [37] Arrived at Sister Lethers. She went for the report to Bro. Hardy's. Found my road from there to Bro. Morris's and had dinner with them. Received the report from Bro. I told him about being invited to sleep while at Duckenfield, how that Sister Morris said I might take lodgings at her house, but [I] declined on account of her husband working in the night. Said that was "him," it was right, it was the way he did when he was in Preston. "Had to sleep on chairs." Had tea and slept at Bro. James Young's.

I moved on my way to Halghmoor. Bro. Fogg was not at home. I left the parcel of Stars, and arrived at Heelis's, where I had [40] some dinner. Sat talking until all was at home, and in the after had a walk round Bradford Park, tea with them, and Tom with me accompanied Martha to the coach as she was going to Pendlebury, after which Tom and me had a walk round the Town of Bolton. Found some of the Saints who was come to market to buy their Sunday's provisions. We found our way to Halliwell with Sister Alice Howarth. We had supper and my companion-Thomas Heelis-departed home about 10:30 p.m., having agreed to come to me the Sunday morning as I was going to Leigh. Lodgings with Howarths.
May 4, Sunday, Leigh
Breakfast with Howarths, and as Bro. Thomas Heelis had promised me that he would be where I was [41] by 10 o'clock to have a walk and show me the road to Leigh. I stayed to wait on account of his promise. I waited till after 11, but he came not. I made my journey to Leigh in company with Sisters Howarth and another of whom I know not the name. It was a strange road to me. They were very kind in showing me the road. They give me a little money for which I was thankful. It caused me to think of my home and situation that I had left in order to preach the gospel. When I had money-plenty of my own. To receive the pennies and tuppences of the poor Saints it caused me to think of times gone by. We had a pleasant walk together, till at length they left me. I was not very good at walking as a pain was in my [42] leg which was not very pleasant to me in traveling, but I found the meeting room and had a good time with those assembled. Had at 5 p.m. dinner with Bro. Walsh, meeting again at 6:30 p.m. I spoke to the Saints about 30 minutes. Bro. Walsh occupied the remaining portion of the time-spoke concerning his travels, having been a soldier for 21 years, said that Christianity was first established in the Netherlands of the north, and 4 shiploads of Saints had this season gone from the northern parts of Germany, there being at present on the Atlantic Ocean 2,258 Saints. Closed with prayer from myself. Supper with Walsh and slept at a lodgings house.
May 5, Monday (Leigh)
Come from my lodgings and took breakfast with Bro. Walsh. Spent the greatest part of the [43] forenoon in reading, writing, and looking at the school atlas, when I went and had dinner with Bro. Wild in Trafalgh St. Also visited Bro. Enos Ray; singing and talking with him about totalism or temperance. He argued that a man was better without drink than with it, and would that all the beer houses was done away. I said that a man would be a better man that could see an evil and have the power to shun it than he who could not walk by a beer house without being led astray. Had tea with him and family. Wrote a letter to Bro. Kay, who was at Liverpool, informing him where I was and how I was moving along. Made my way to the General Post office of Leigh, promising Bro. Ray to meet him at the room by 8 p.m., as there was being a school to instruct some boys in reading, etc. Attended school and had a good time in reading the 2nd chapter of Eph. Told them [44] it was not the amount of reasoning they went through but "the good that they might learn." Bro. Walsh then came in and in his conversation treated upon the various gifts in the church, especially upon the gift of tongues, as some had in tongues spoken out the deceitfulness of their own heart unknowingly. Instructed us about many good things, the proper use and meaning of words, etc. Supper and lodgings with Bro. Ray.
May 6th, Tuesday, Tyldesley
Breakfast with Bro. Ray and chatting with him. He let me look at a work that he had just completed, or done taken in, a dictionary the finest one I had ever seen. I pursued my journey to Worsley, called at Morts and had dinner with them. Also called at Bro. Greenhalgh, the Prest. of Tyldesley Branch, had a rest and washed myself, felt a little refreshed, and went on my journey. Stayed at Bro. Geo. Partington, and [45] had tea with him. He said he could not understand how the blood of Jesus could cleanse us from all sin. I tried [to] explain to him how he died not for our actual sins, but for the sin of the world, that we should be judged for the deeds done in the body. Called at Bro. J.E. Stones. We had conversation together. Said he had paid more tithing in the church than what would emigrate him and all his family, but always rejoiced in paying it, would not be satisfied "now" if he was in good circumstances without doing so. Come to Bro. Atkinson's, had a meeting. I spoke for 15 minutes and all rejoiced under the influence of the spirit. Three of the elders bore testimony to the truth and ??? at the end to come out a "Wheat." Prayer from myself. Lodgings with Bro. Atkinson, and slept with Bro. James Stones.
May 7, Wednesday, Worsley
Breakfast with Sister Atkinson. She was [46] very kind in getting up for me my fronts and colliers, playing the violin, all the forenoon, and reading, etc. Dinner with them, tea at Bro. Matthew Stones, meeting at half past seven. About 10 in number was present. Bro. Fogg spoke some time. I then occupied the remaining portion, exhorting the Saints to keep the good spirit within them and not let their oil go out of their vessels but be ready whenever the Bridegroom might make his appearance. Closed with prayer from myself. Supper with Bro. Fogg. Lodged with Bro. Hollowes.
May 8, Thursday, Pendlebury
Slept at Hollows and had breakfast with Sister Hollows at noon. The reason of my having breakfast so late on in the day was that in the morning when I arose, they were all [47] gone off to work. I spent the forenoon in washing myself, reading, etc. Left and made my way to home. Called to see my former master. Had a talk with him about the American war. He was not of so good opinion as he was a while ago on account of having been about 60 thousand ??? near Richmond and Corenth. Was somewhat surprised at the "Mormon Emigration," as there was 6 ships now on the mighty deep, wafting their way to the Western Continent and another expecting sail on the 13 ???. Had tea with Rushtons, found Bro. Dame and had a walk together round the fields. He was rather desirous of being Josph. Bridge's sweetheart. Desired me to tell her to cheer up her heart, for she would yet hear from him. Attending meeting, I spoke [48] some time to the Saints. Said that men was looking yet in the future to see the scripture fulfilled and was literally transpiring before their eyes from day to day. Referred to the gathering of the Saints and the present difficulties with the nations, etc. Bro. Dame spoke of some length to the Saints, it being the last time that he had the privilege to preach in England. Said he had rejoiced in the spirited remarks of his Bro. That it would probably be his last time that he would have of speaking to them again this side the water. Exhorted them to be faithful, do right, keep their covenants, live their holy religion. Referred to the American War, said he had lived in a day when in congress they would call each other gentlemen, and also challenge to fight each other in a duel, that war would [49] spread throughout our own land even as it was doing in America. Prayer from myself. Supper at Bro. Snapes, and slept at home.
May 9th, Friday, 123 ???
Bro. Dame and me had breakfast together at home. When we made our journey to 123, found letters for both of us from Liverpool, informing him that the vessel he should sail on was going on the 14th. We had calculated having a good time together on the Sunday, but to how(?) disappointed he had to be gone by the 7 o'clock train. We had some oatmeal and milk to dinner, and a walk round the town in afternoon, tea together. Give me good advice; to be faithful, keep up my spirits, do that which was right and the Lord would bless me. Advised me to be careful and not be led awry by the young girls, especially to be mindful of those at Stockport "Shaws," in fact to be mind- [50] ful and careful of all, for my own salvation's sake. He departed by 7 o'clock, "I believe a better man," never presided over Manchester Conference. Returned from the station and had a read in the "Star," my name having for the first time appeared in the columns of the "Star," No. 19, Vol. 24.
Supper and washed my leg in warm water, and rolled it in red flannel. Slept comfortable during the night.
May 10th, Saturday, Clayton
Breakfast at Bentlys, attended to bookkeeping, wrote a letter to Thomas Pitts congratulating him upon past occurrences. Left the room for Clayton on bus in company with Bro. William Lee. Arrived and attended to Bro. Wardle's sale as he was selling off to go to Utah. Tea with Bro. Lee. Formed an acquaintance with Bro. Holt, accompanied him to [51] his house, made an acquaintance with his family, after which his son William with me had a walk through Openshaw. Very pleasant evening. Enjoyed each other from ???. In our journey a young woman met us desiring relief, a penny or any small copper that we might have to spare. I had not any money but Wm. gave her a penny. I tried to picture before him that ??? she had a sweetheart, and had traveled in this road in order to not meet him, and desired not that he should not know her distress. Accidentally she met with him. ??? what would be the feelings of the party.
Supper together when we had singing, dancing. Made ourselves as merry as possible. We got to bed by half past 2 in the morning.
May 11, Sunday, Ashton
Had breakfast. Left in company with Bro. Holt visiting some of the Saints. Bro. Lee [52] asked me if I had any money. I told him "No." He gave me 4 pence to assist me on my road. Made my journey to Ashton, had dinner with Bro. George Lee. Attending meeting in the afternoon, a goodly number of Saints present. I spoke some 25 minutes to them upon the Sacrament. The Saints bore their testimony. Meeting dismissed with prayer from myself.
Tea with Bro. Morton. Meeting again-opened with singing, prayer, etc. I addressed those present for 50 minutes upon the principles of "Truth," the "Diety," "Baptism," "Infant Sprinkling," the "Spirit," etc. Visited a sister who was afflicted, prayed with her, singing, etc. Supper and lodgings with Bro. Hardy.
May 12, Monday, Ashton
Breakfast with Bro. Hardy and had a walk round the town with the brethren. Dinner with Bro. Samuel Booth, tea with [53] John McGee, visited Bro. Leathers. Had a good time with them, singing, etc. From there to William Booth's, who had been in the bat (?) on account of some grievance or another. He was "out," was cut off at the time John Lee was Prest. of the branch who had ruled with a kind of an iron hand, thought he would have everybody made like himself. If they would not do just as he did and believe as he believed he would cut them off without much warning. I talked with him advising him to let bygones be bygones. Father, who is out of the church, said he desired to have some talk with me sometime.
Some of the brethren was anxious to get up a kind [king?] of a party. And afraid some evil might come into the branch on account of some wanting to recite a "Drama."
Supper, and lodgings with Bro. Hardy.
[54] May 13, Tuesday, Ashton
Breakfast with Bro. Hardy and in company with his Bro. George went to see him in the mill. Stayed in for about half an hour, had dinner with Bro. George at his Aunt's. Wrote a letter to Bro. Kay informing him how I am getting on with the Saints.
Tea with Bro. Lether and family. Stayed a while with them, and arrived at the meeting room by 7:30 p.m. A goodly number of Saints was present. Some of the brethren bore their testimony. After them I occupied about 45 minutes in addressing them upon the "Gospel," the "Regulations," of "Prayers," the Order of the "Priesthood." Showed how that all should magnify their callings and consider it an honor so to do. Concluded with "Emigration." A good spirit prevailed. One of the brethren said I had done much good on the previous day. Supper and lodgings [with] Bro. Hardy.
[55] May 14, Wednesday, Oldham
Breakfast with Bro. Hardy, attended to writing a little. As I had been invited to visit some of the Booths' family I went to Samuels'. Had some talk with his brother who is not up to his duty. A strange and dark spirit prevails with such men.
Dinner with Bro. Samuel. Desired me to come any time and see him, have my tea with him. He should be glad of my com[ing], etc. I left for Oldham, a distance of 4 or 5 miles. Tea with Sis. Ashworth. Talked with her a while. Went up to old Father Cocker's. Got my clean shirt and left another to be washed. After a longly [sic] friendly talk we made our way for meeting. The brethren bore testimony to the gospel. I spoke about 40 minutes upon the unity of the Saints and Priesthood, gathering of the Saints, etc. Supper and lodgings with Father Cocker, who is in his 82nd year.
[56] May 15, Thursday, Clayton
Breakfasted with Father Cocker, dinner with Bro. James Gledhill. Had a long talk with his wife. She seemed to entertain rather strange views with regard to the disturbances or trouble which existed in Gledhill's family. The old man, her husband, was all good and no bad in her estimation. Of course it's all right as far as that goes, but the brethren call him deceitful. He come to the meeting night before and if I am not mistook [mistaken], he had some "rum" within him at the time he was exhorting the Saints to be faithful and do right.
I left there for Clayton, a distance of 7 miles. Called to see Sis. Ashman. I arrived a little earlier on account of riding in a vehicle about 2 miles. I was very much tired, and so he was very kind for giving me the "ride." We chatted a while and had tea. After then I give a helping hand to the mangle [possibly a British word for laundry] for [57] an hour and a half. As she had promised to go [to] meeting with me, she said I must come back for company with her. We got done our mangling and we [went] off together to meeting. Her husband, Bro. John, was there. They are both kindhearted good Saints. Meeting commenced at 8 p.m. Not many Saints was present as 9 had emigrated. During the time of singing, Bro. Schofield came in. I spoke to them present for some time. Bro. Schofield spoke a little and the brethren bore testimony. Meeting closed with prayer from myself. We got to Ashmans'. Him and me stayed up until after 12 o'clock telling me about his experience in the church until at length we got to bed.
May 16, Friday, at 123
Breakfast at Bro. Ashman's and walked from Newton-Heath to 123 Oldfield Road. Stars had not come. Waited a while and [58] went to see Bro. John Lea. He was at work. His wife is a very comfortable woman. She got me a dinner with all the family. She told me about her dreams and the interpretation, which was all very good.
I went back to the room. Bro. Kay made his appearance from Liverpool. I was exceeding glad to see him. He [had] come to stay and preside over the Manchester Conference. The first thing he desired to know was if I had come. I helped to carry up his box. He was very unwell on account of cold. Star parcels I cleared all off the first thing. The leading ??? was in town. The murder of 4 persons in Halford (Stafford?). I got no particulars. Returned, desired Bro. Kay to tell me where I must go the forthcoming week. Said I must go where I could do the most good. Come up to Pendlebury, got a ride in a coach which was going to Bolton, arrived home. I had wrote a letter to Bro. Pitts and was not satisfied because (?) they had had none. Supper, lodgings.
[59] [top margin: "Romans VIII, 29 verse"]
May 17, Saturday, Pendlebury
Breakfast at home, clogging and working in the cellar all forenoon, as my shoes were gone to my old master's to be mended. Called to see sister Lusy, called in Joseph Bridges sweetheart. Told her what Bro. Dame desired me to tell her, that is for her to rest herself content with regard to him. She would very likely hear again from him, as he had been working for her good all the time. Desired her to take good care of herself and keep herself to herself. She said there was no fear of that.
Stayed a while with Bro. Pitts. Had tea with him. Called at Harrops'. Rachel spoke with regard to my father. Said that his sons would have hard work to please him in choosing wives. I passed it off with a joke. Called at Rushtons'. Read a letter from son Thomas, very good one he had sent. Supper and lodgings with Bro. Newton at Kersley.
[60] May 18, Sunday, Bury

Arrived at the room a little before 2. Had a good meeting. I spoke to them about 25 minutes upon sacrament, doing right, and unto others as we desire them to do unto us. Meeting closed. Tea with Bro. I addressed them for 50 minutes upon the first principles of the gospel, etc. Had a walk round the fields with Bro. Entwistle (?). Supper and lodgings with Bro. Witworth.
[61] May 19, Monday, Bury
Breakfast with Bro. Witworth and had a walk with 2 young men of the family over Bradshaw Hill. Returned from our tour up the hills. I was invited to dinner with Sister Duckworth. According to request, I went. They had some rather peculiar news to tell me. Sis. Mary Ann Worrell was infested with her mother's spirit. She was sent for out of the mill but could not come. ??? with Bro. Entwistle.
At evening I was again sent for, but determined to have nothing to do with the concern. I took with me Bro. Entwistle, but the subject came no further on the carpet then that she was troubled with spirits from the eternal world. It was stopped at that.
Bro. Entwistle, me and Bro. Schofield of Radcliffe had a walk through the town. Returned, supper with Bro. Entwistle. Slept with Witworths.
[62] May 20, Tuesday, Bolton
Breakfast with Witworths. Pursued my journey in company with two Bros. Witworths. Went with me a long way. We parted after a little rest upon the grass.
I found my way to Bolton, a distance of 6 miles. Dinner with Elder Joseph Booth and a long talk together about American affairs.
Passed [the] afternoon with sisters Heelis in writing a letter to Thomas Rushton, who is now in Africa, one also to Bro. Kay. Tea with them.
Attending meeting at half past eleven (seven?). A goodly number was present. I spoke some length of time to them. Supper and lodgings with Sisters Howarth in Hallewell.
May 21, Wednesday, Radcliffe
Breakfast with Howarths, and reading a short time. Visited another sister in [63] Hallewell, come right down to Heelises, as they had been washing some clothes for me. Arrived about 10:30 a.m. Dinner with them. Martha was much better in health.
Had a talk with Mother in the afternoon upon emigration as she had given me some money for herself and said it would do for some of them. I desired them to have their several deposits in their own names and then they could part and divide when they thought proper. With a good feeling we parted and a healthy shake of the hand, Jane having 3 pence. I felt good towards them.
Called to see Sister Booth and made my way up the Canal Bank to Radcliffe. Found Sister Lords, had tea with them. He (?) was only working 3 days a week.
Meeting at half past seven. I spoke to them some time upon the thankfulness [64] they Saints ought to feel with knowledge they possessed upon the gospel. Spoke about the condition of the poor people of England, how the rich would ride in their fine chariots and the poor upon their estates must go about begging bread. Meeting closed and all went to our several [places] of abode. Supper with Sister Lords and lodgings with Bro. James Barlow.
May 22, Thursday, Pendlebury
Breakfast with Sister Holt. Dinner with Sister Lettice Redford. Her husband had gone to the Valley 8 years since, got married and had not sent for her and family. Tea with Bro. Johnson. It was getting rather late in the afternoon and I was obliged to leave as Radcliffe is about 3 and a half miles from Pendlebury.
In company with Bro. John Redford, we made our journey. Called to see a sick sister who was glad to see me. She said I gave [65] her a little money. I had not much but I know not what I give her. Parted with my companion, he having gone with me more than half way. Meeting at 7:30 p.m. We had a good meeting. Supper with Bro. Pitts. Bro. James Snape(?) gave me 6 pence. I felt somewhat thankful as it was all I had. Lodged at home.
May 23, 123, Friday
At home breakfast, rather wet morning. Arrived at the room, Bro. Kay was a little better. Got out Star parcels. We had conversation together. Told him where I had been and spent the previous week. Exhorted me to faithfulness. Asked me how [shorthand?] said [???] thought that was [???] very good [???] as such I would [???] memory. Had a comfortable day together. Truly I felt to rejoice when he showed me [66] the priestly garment which he would wear when he got to Salt Lake. Said I should not learn the use of them until I got to the Valley. Truly I feel to rejoice, and stimulated while writing about it. Feel more determined to live my religion and magnify the calling placed upon me. Said I would live here to learn, in order for to know when I arrive at my much desired home. [more shorthand, or perhaps Deseret letters] Rushtons [???] went to sleep at Mitchell Rothwell, as I had to go to Middleton the following morning. Supper and lodgings with them.
May 24, Saturday, Middleton
Breakfast with Bro. John Rothwell. Went through the Mechanics Institution news of not much consequence. Read a little in a book about the Mormons.
Bro. Mitchell, John & me arrived at the room. Bro. Kay was a little better. They departed. We had a walk round town, to the infirmary. [67] Rifle men was beating up their drums and playing music. A man asked Bro. Kay if he was going to America next spring, and asked me also if I was going. I did not know. Bro. Kay guessed if he went, I should go with him. This from Bro. Kay I thought was first rate (??), just suited me to think that I must go next spring with Bro. John Mowbern Kay.
I left him for Middleton. Got dinner at 4:20 p.m. at a book shop and made my way up Oldham Road, but soon found out I was wrong, in the wrong direction. Inquired, got righted, went up Rachdale (?) Road, was very ill, tired, as my leg hurt me a little. Rested a while in Guckens (?) Part. Rested again in the Harpurah Cemetery. I had much trouble to get to my journey's end, as my leg so much failed me. Arrived about 6:30 p.m. Had a talk with Bro. Wood, as things was not all straightforward in the branch. The cause of the disturbance was on account of Bro. Joseph Eckersley's approval of his son going to [68] America and leaving a young girl in the family way, which is not right that he should have done so. Neither of them is in the church so we cannot cut them off for the wrong.
Supper with Bro. Wood, and went to sleep with Bro. Eckersley, who told me all about matters and things. I tried to do the best I could to gain peace and good feeling with both parties. Slept with Eckersleys.
May 25, Oldham, Sunday
Breakfast with Eckersleys. Him and me had a walk to Bro. Easthopes (?), round town, to the largest chimney in this country, 34 yards round the bottom and 120 yards high, Cliver (?) Monument. We got back to Bro. Easthope's by 12:15 p.m. but had not been asked to stay [for] dinner, so [I] was very desirous to get away. He then wanted me to stay, but I preferred going. He accompanied me to Bro. Woods' next door. Had dinner with Bro. Wood.
If ever I felt the effects of being away from home it was then. Then I began to think [69] about myself and new (?) I was in the world and on the world although I cared not for a dinner I could have done without as well as with, but Bro. Wood's wife said as long as they had a crust of bread I must share with them. I felt a little tenderhearted when they has telling me not to be bashful, but felt pretty good under what they said.
Arrived at Oldham by 2:35 p.m. I met Bro. Kay according to promise. He spoke to them very spiritedly upon the gathering of the Saints and that hundreds would yet be gathered from Oldham. Brethren bore testimony. Evening meeting: Bro. Buckley spoke upon the good principles of the gospel, showing how those out of the church enjoyed a portion of the spirit of truth. Otherwise, they would not be led in the way of truth, for the Spirit of God leadeth men & women in the ways of all saving truth. Therefore if they did not enjoy a portion of the Spirit of Truth, they would [70] not be in the way of truth.
Bro. Kay then gave expression to his feelings, said I arise to speak to you for a short time although I feel my own weakness of body. Bro. Buckley dropped a remark and said "This kingdom has not been built up by man, that is true. It has not been built up by man but by God. Poor, illiterate men have been God's instruments to do the work. Showed how the kingdom has been rejected and persecuted from Missouri, Illinois, Nauvoo and north and south army sent to destroy them, but still the little stone representing the kingdom continues to grow and will grow whether they admit us into the Union or not. And who cares? It is not my business to care. God is at the helm and he will lead his kingdom," & many other interesting remarks flowed from his lips which the Saints seemed to appreciate as a sweet morsel. Meeting closed with prayer. I accompanied Bro. Buckley to Mosley, although very ill tired, we made out the report, got supper and went to bed.
[71] May 26, Monday, Mosley
Breakfast at Bro. Buckley's. Spent forenoon in reading, etc. I resumed to stay here all day even as Bro. Buckley desires me so to do as he had to get "Book money" for me. As it comes nearer noon a woman ??? comes in bustling all about the house getting a dinner for some one. Everyone was at work so I was left in myself alone. She told me to help and get a dinner. With the request I complied, having dinner at Buckleys.
In the afternoon wrote to our family and to Thomas Heelis. Tea with this friend who had so kindly got ready my dinner. She told me she was being baptized this week. Spent evening in singing, music, etc. Supper & retired.
May 27, Tuesday
Rose by 5:36 a.m. All with the exception of one of their wives was up so early, and I did not want to be in the room with her [72] when there was no man but myself left. Accordingly, I got up when they did. There are kind of Trails and Temptations two [too?], which must be overcome. Breakfast with Buckleys. Found my way from Mosely to Ashton, got the report from Bro. Lether. It was a very wet morning. My clothes upon me was very damp, but I could not help it. Went down from Lethers' to Bro. Shaw, give him the receipt of £2.00 which he had given me to get exchanged but could not do it.
Went to Bro. Connell in Duckenfield. Reports was not ready so I could not go to Stockport as I desired. Had dinner at Bro. Morton's, returned to Connells, waited until he came home. We then made out reports, went to Ashton together, and had meeting. A goodly number was present. Spoke to them for some time. Felt well with them. Meeting closed.
Bro. Samuel Booth give me a [symbol]. I was very thankful to him so that it give me a chance to ride to Stockport if I choosed [sic].
The Saints was going to Marple and desired one to go with them. Supper with Bro. Aaron hardy & lodgings.
[73] May 28, Wednesday, 123
Breakfast with Sister Hardy. Asked her my [word missing?] to Stockport by noon. Had dinner with Sister Pass. Visited Cleggs, where I got the report. Came away with Sister Pass, who had accompanied me to Cleggs. It being about three in the afternoon, I was just in time for the train to Manchester. Bid goodbye to Sis. Pass, who was very kind for obliging me in showing me the various ways to the Saints' houses.
Got a newspaper, read proceedings in parliament speaking of the Latheregy (?) desiring to change that from the Book of Common Prayer, could not properly decide the matter. The various bishops desired Lord Ebury to withdraw the bill. Some in the House called it nonsense and said it now became a question whether any profection (perfection? Profession?) was necessary or not. The bill was withdrawn by Lord Ebury to again be brought before them that day 6 months.
[74] Arrived in Manchester by 4:20 p.m. Went in a place to get my portrait. I did not like the place very well. Paid for it and come away left it. Met Bro. Kay at room, give him my reports & moneys amounting to £4.7.10. Attending to Star parcels, as they had come in very early this week. I made my way up for Pendlebury, leaving Bro. Kay to take out the parcels the following morning. He gave me his blessing and said "God bless you, Bro. James." I felt to bless him. I had 9 branches to visit and get reports, etc. by Tuesday following. Supper and lodgings at home.
May 29, Thursday, Bolton
Breakfast at home. Visited the Saints. Dinner with Bro. Fogg and received moneys & reports. Went to Heelis', tea with them. Had a good time chatting with them. Had a walk in the evening with Tom. Returned, stayed a while up with Tom talking about old times, as we now had not the chance to pleasure as much as formerly. Supper, slept with Thomas.
[75] May 30, Friday, Tyldesley
Breakfast with Heelis[es]. Very wet morning so I had use for my open covering. Made my way to Shaving Lane and got finely [finally?] wet through. Bro. James Stones would have me to pull off some of my clothes. I did so. After doing so I felt none the more uncomfortable. Had dinner with them. Called to see Powels [Howels?]. Tea with them, daughter Mary. Ann was very unwell, going away in weakness or decline.
Called to see Bro. J.E. Stones (?), who is in the depth of his trouble on account of the death of his son William, aged 7 years & 6 months. I went upstairs to see him in his coffin. Old man was much troubled, said he would much rather have parted with anything in his possession than one of his children. He gave me a shilling to put in the mission fund. I did not desire to take it from him unless he could comfortably spare it, but he insisted upon me so to have it.
It continued to rain and was again wet through when I got to Morts where I had supper & lodgings.
[76] May 31, Saturday, Leigh
Breakfast with Morts. Read a little in the newspaper speaking about the Manchester murder, giving full descriptions of Taylor & his wife, who is supposed to have killed three of their own children, and the murder of one Mr. Mellor but have not yet received their sentence but at the present time is in Kerkdale Gaol [Jail].
Called to see Greenhalghs, he who is the present of the Tyldesley Branch. He had been took away to the Preston Prison on account of some debt that he owed some man but possibly could not pay. He has a wife and 7 children in his absence to cling round the table for something to eat but had to say they do not find any. If this is not being in a bad state of circumstances I don't know how they must be fixed. A poor, hard-working man must be took to gaol [jail] simply because he cannot live without having with his family something to eat. He is gone for 21 days, too long for a man under such trials to be away from home. The Saints I believe are doing what they can for him.
[77] Dinner with Owens. Found my way through the fields to Leigh. Stopped with Bro. Walsh, who made me very welcome. He is a fine old gentleman. Had tea with him. Read for him the approval of the Prophet Brigham to take the governorship of the newly formed State of Deseret. Was not well received by the Congress. Had a walk through Leigh town to Bro. Rayes, where I had supper & lodgings.
June 1st, Sunday, Bury
Breakfast with Rayes. Called to see Bro. Walsh. The girl showed me the road to Leigh Station, where I booked for Bolton. Fine summer's morning. Arrived in Bolton by 10:10 a.m. Attended council meeting, a good spirit prevailed. Dinner with Bro. Thomas Heelis. Got washed, etc. Bro. Heelis accompanied me to Tottington (?). A good meeting in the afternoon, tea with Bro. Walsh. We then made our way for Bury. Had a good evening's meeting. Both spoke some time & meeting closed.
Bro. Entwistle went with us to the Bury Station, when he departed for Darcy Lever, having enjoyed ourselves together during the day. Lodgings with Witworths.
[78] June 2nd, Monday, Pendlebury
Breakfast at Witworths, dinner with Duckenworths. Made my way with Sis. Duckworth through Bury. She introduced me to Mr. Prophet, once a brother in the church but now out. He accompanied me to Radcliffe, telling me all kids of tales about his former brethren. He had not the spirits of the gospel. I told him do as well as he knew how only do those things that is right. He left me near Lords. I called in, got tea, went to Holts for the report. They had a boy dead from fever. Great trouble was in the house.
Arrived home by 8:30 p.m. Supper at home. Visited Pitts, Bro. Berry was very unwell. Bros. Pitts & Snape had just been to see him.
June 3, Tuesday, Clayton
At home. Breakfast arrived by 10 o'clock at 123. Bro. Kay was a little better. Delivered my moneys, £4.7.6 1/2. Finished up our reports and went with him to Knott Mill Station for Liverpool. Returned to the room, attended to matters. I thought to [79] have gone to Ashton, but being very hungry I called at Bro. Lee's, where I had tea. I was very ill tired on account of being without dinner, but could not be avoided. He is a blind. He and his wife is always very kind indeed to me. The child was not well. I administered to it according to request and retired to bed.
June 4, Wednesday, Oldham
Breakfast with Sis. Lee. Left for Oldham, a distance of 6 miles. Dinner with Sis. Ashworth at 3 p.m. Visited Bro. Cocker, got clean shirt, etc. I thought to try and settle the grievous disturbance which had so long existed in Gledhills' family so I made it my business to go up as far as Bro. James's. Bro. Dame, when he last visited this place, said he must go down to his Bro. Edward and settle the matter which had so long existed between them. I thought to have gone down with him, but he said he should never go down to his house but wanted to spy his opportunity and speak to Lee in a private manner (Edward's wife). He said he had nothing to do with him for this reason, because he was not [80] in the church and therefore would not go to his house. Edward had said if ever he saw him speak to his wife, would almost kill him. This kind of work has upset the branch for more than 2 years and it is high time that it be done away, the idea of 2 fleshly brothers being so much at variance with each other. I don't know what they mean. It is mean work I['m] sure and if both of them don't take very good care they will go to the devil together and both [have] been good elders in the church. I always visit them with the best of feelings, interested in both of their welfares, because I think if one of the two go to heaven they all ought to go together. If I must dictate any at all to them I would send them both on the top of the highest mountain in England and there pray until they loved each other. I think that would be the best plan for them to do.
Meeting at 7:30 p.m. A goodly [number] was present. I spoke about three quarters of an hour to them. I don't know that even I felt better in speaking to the Saints. In my remarks I desired them never to say anything behind the back that they could not face to say before anybody. My words went very well from me. The brethren bore testimony to what had been said. Closed, supper & lodgings with old father Cocker, who is between 80 & 90.
[81] June 5, Thursday, Clayton & Newton
Breakfast with father Cocker and left for Ashworths. Stayed all forenoon, phonetic writing, singing, etc. Dinner with them and made my journey for Ashmans. Felt a little tired on the road and rested. Got at Bro. Ashman's by 4 p.m. Turned mangle [laundry?] a short time and then had tea at 5:30 p.m. Bro. John came in from his work, commenced to tell me a story about a woman saying when he was president of Newton Branch he cut her off unjustly. Now this is causing a bit of a hubbub and what will be the end of it I do not know but Bro. Ashman is for having it tried over again in the presence of Bro. Kay. According to the minutes he read to me it does not appear to me she is telling the truth. It is more than 12 months since it happened and I think it's all rubbish to resurrect such a circumstance. How it will go in I don't know, but I will watch.
Attended Clayton meeting at 8 o'clock, but it was half past before we got the meeting started. About 11 was present out of about 37. Tottington, Nov. 10th, 1862
Dear Bro. Kay,
I feel well in writing a few lines to you at the present time, informing you how matters is moving with me and how I am getting along, feeling it a pleasure to me for to do so, knowing your desire to know of the welfare of the Saints and branches which I visit. On Saturday morning the 8th Inst, left home for this place through Radcliffe and Bury, visiting the Saints of the road of my travels.
Spent evening at a social party held at Bro. Walsh's, got up purposely [170] to get those together who were lingering at the edge of baptism, which ended in the much desired result.
Attended by brethren, sisters and some friends, all seemed to enjoy themselves while participating in the enjoyments of singing and recitation. Satisfactory order prevailed, accompanied by the warming influence of the Spirit of the Lord, after which we went to the brook running through this village, where I had the happy opportunity and privilege of baptizing 6 persons, 4 of whom had been in the church before.
So you see there is a good spirit of inquiry being made manifest by those who has once been in the church.
It rejoices my heart to see this the case with them, as well as a great many who has never embraced the [171] gospel of Christ, but they seeing and feeling, therefore are brought to the knowledge and understanding of what are the cause and what will be the results of the present distress and impending calamities which are lowering over the nations and people who will not receive and obey the gospel sent unto them by our Heavenly Father.
Sunday the 9th we had two pleasant and good meetings, room well filled on both occasions. Elder T. Schofield, of Radcliffe, and myself occupied the evening meeting, addressing those present on the first principles of the Gospel.
There is a fair prospect of more coming into the church in this branch. The meetings are well attended by strangers. I rejoice in my [172] labours, desire an interest in your prayers, accept of my kindest regards, in which Brother and Sister Walsh & Sister Holt, who is here, joins.
Yours with increasing respect in the Gospel of Christ,
James Lythgoe

Tea at Walshes, at evening preached about 45 minutes to a good number of Saints. I had got a bad cold, [186] and Mrs. Walsh made me a good meal and I soon went to bed.

I occupied the greatest portion of time. Introduced the subject of ??ing, Tyldesley Banks Branch to Mosley Common. They were favorable but did not like Bro. Greenhalgh's belief and practicing spiritualism.
December 17th
Left early in the morning for Leigh, dinner with Bro. Greenhalgh. I spoke to him about the writing of both branches. He was very agreeable. Desired me to proceed, thought it would be good. Asked him if all were willing. He said, "They were," and sooner it could be accomplished and better. He introduced the subject to me on Nov. 19th, desiring me to consult Prest. Kay on the matter. [189] I did so and he was quite willing that it should take place. He has not the spirit of his position, but lost it because of his belief in table knocking and spiritualism. This I am a witness to. But he is giving up his presidency in a willing manner. We proposed to meet at Bro. Stones if he would be willing in order to divide the distance of the journey.
Had a good meeting at Leigh in the evening. Annointed Bro. Walsh's eye. Supper and slept with him.

The first news is a mill in this town had took fire. By 8 morning went to Bro. Walsh's. Sis. Walsh and me fell in conversation. I told her I was sorry I had inconvenienced them so long and me not been [195] aware of it. She desired me not to be so. Went with Bro. Thomas to church in the afternoon come down to Bury in company with Bro. Ainscough. He desired to give me a shilling that they had received while out in the night for singing, as I was going without dinner. December 28th [sic-December 29th]
Left Holts by 8:30 a.m. through Bury and to Tottington. Stayed with Bro. Walsh to dinner. He then called me into his parlor, told me the brethren were not united with him in trying to raise a pound [198] in order to pay for Bro. Kay's boots to Bro. Ainscough who had made them
He felt like giving up the presidency of the branch, but I kind of talked to him for a while and he felt much better, although the matters are not yet settled with him and Bro. Schofield. I had a good long talk with him and Bro. Ainscough. Received reports, etc. I give to him the shilling he had given me on my last visit, which was took out of the Poor Fund; says he, "I was thinking of giving you what now remains in, but if you don't like to receive it I can't help it." I said let it all go in [199] the Mission Fund and help to defray the expenses of the conference. Thanked him for his good feelings towards me, and could say "God bless him," for his good will.
It was not because I did not need the money that I refused what I had offered to me, for I believe there was not a cent in my pocket of my own, but I could not consciously (conscientiously?) receive money in that manner or in that kind of a manner. Therefore, for conscience sake I rather desisted receiving it. Left by 3:30 p.m. for Bolton in company with Bro. Ainscough, who told me Bro. Walsh desired [200] him to find fresh lodgings, as his wife and him could not well agree on account of Thomas Ainscough owing him about 24 shillings. Tea at Heelis. Martha accompanied me to the station, but I was too late to go to Leigh, as the cars had left, so I concluded to stay. Spent night in the room decorating for New Year's Day. Slept in Halliwell at Sis. Howarth's.
December 30th
Rose by 6 a.m. 7:10 a.m. left station per rail for Leigh. By 8 was at Bro. Walsh's and had breakfast. Got report. He give me 6 pence. Come to Tyldesley and Worsley, having received reports, etc. [201] Bro. Atkinson expressed himself as not being able, from what had been said to him, to understand the reason of Tyldesley Branch being joined to Mosley Common Branch. He seemed to think there might be reasons which was not to be told, as he could not see through the matter as he desired. I told him if he would live by counsel from those who was in possession of the light of the Spirit of God, all would work right and be right and result in much benefit to himself, whether he was able to see it clearly or not. It is always the safest plan and will [202] result in the most good to those who obey the revealed councils (counsels?) of heaven, which are true, authentic and divine, and those taking that course pursue the best policy. The reason of both branches joining together is because we do not at all recognize Bro.Geenhalgh's belief and practice of Spirit Rapping. Left for Halshmoor, stayed with Bro. Fogg, writing, etc. Had supper, slept and Hollows.
December 31st
Left Hollow's by 8:30 a.m. Arrived at Pitts by 10, wrote until 12. He did not ask me to have any dinner. Got reports and left at that time. Come down to 42, had [203] dinner, delivered to Bro. Kay what I had received, £9.4.11 1/2, left road on the coach to Island ??? Height (?). Slept at home.
January 1st, 1863
Another year has passed away, taking with it all its troubles and difficulties. The events that has transpired fills me with deep reflection, reflections of which softens down my feelings to a very great extent, considering the blood that has been spilled in fulfillment of the prophecies of the prophet Joseph, 32 years ago since their delivery.
Any another year out, its appearance does not offer [204] any joy or happiness to the suffering thousands which has been affected by this fratricidal war, now raging on the American continent. The purposes of the Almighty must and will roll forth in spite of all opposition that may be heaped against him or his work.
My earnest desire is that I may, at the commencement of this year, start (?) as to be able to continue in the discharge of my duties and keep in the spirit of my calling.
My sister Rachel and me went to Bolton, attended party. Had a good time. Bro. and Sis. Kay present. I slept in Hallewell.

January 4th
Thomas accompanied me on my road to Tottington, arrived by 11 a.m. We had a [206] council meeting by 1. A ??? matters was brought up by the brethren against one another (?), Bro. Kay's boots being the instrument. Bro. Walsh had purposed to the brethren in a previous council to pay for the boots. Bro. Kay had received, and which Bro. Thomas Ainscough had made, by subscription assisted by what they expected their party to make. At the same time the man who had made the shoes was in debt to Bro. Walsh some little over a pound, and was paying this said pound into the Emigration Fund. Bro. Walsh thought he ought to have paid him what he [207] owed before putting to that purpose. Some of them thought Bro. Walsh was getting up this way of paying for them boots to pay himself with, and this was what caused the grievances to arise with them. After a while I managed to get them in a better spirit, and they felt like asking each other forgiveness for what they had said, which brought about a good feeling. Closed at 2:30. Meeting by 7:30. I prayed and occupied the fore part of the time. A good spirit was present. Bro. Atkinson and Stones spoke a little. Powell closed. I spoke to him and wife upon the subject of gathering. She did not feel as if she wanted to go this spring. He had a desire to go but desired his wife to be willing. Supper and slept.
Wednesday, March 25th
Had toothache all night. Breakfast and had much talk with Sis. Atkinson about gathering, but she did not desire to go this spring. Come to Tyldesley on the railway bank. Stayed in Bro. Greenhalgh's while he got dinner, and then left for Halshmoor. On my journey bought [256] a cake with the last 2 pence there was in my possession, which made me feel much better while dinner time was passing over. Arrived at Bro. Fogg's by 3 p.m. I felt well under the influence of bearing all with patience, knowing that I was engaged in the Lord's service and that the future opened up bright prospects for young citizens in this kingdom. Tea with Bro. Fogg. Supper and lodgings with Bro. Hollows.
Thursday, March 26th
Had a good night's rest. Very rought and windy, but dry under foot. It is now one year this morning since I was appointed to travel in this conference, and my experience--or a little of it--will be seen in the forepart of this book. Dinner at Bro. Stones. Come to Pendlebury in the evening. Had a good meeting. [257] Supper at Bro. Snapes, slept at home.
Friday, March 27th
Breakfast and left for 42. Had dinner and took out parcels. Tea, supper and slept at Bro. Michell Rothwell's.
Saturday, March 28th
Come home, had dinner, and left for Worsley. Tea, supper and lodgings with Bro. Atkinson.
Sunday, March 29th
They could not yet agree yet about emigrating this spring, but thought there was a little time yet. Come to Tyldesley, dinner at Hones. Attended meeting in the afternoon. In the evening come to Leigh and [258] preached to a good many Saints. Slept with Bro. Walsh.
Monday, March 30th
Breakfast, and in company with Bro. Walsh come to the station, booked for Bolton. Arrived at Heelis by 9 a.m. Had a good conversation with Mother Heelis, and by 11 left for Tottington. Arrived at Bro. Walsh's by 1:30 p.m. Received report, left and had dinner in Bro. Ainscough['s] room. Tea at Smiths, come down to Walsh's in co. with Bro. Entwistle. Had a little to eat, come to Bury. Stayed at Edwins.
Tuesday, March 31st
It is one year since I first visited Oldham with Bro. Kay. Come down to Radcliffe, and [259] through Pendlebury to Manchester. Give Bro. Kay what I had received, £14.7.5 1/2. He would have me take back Tottington report, as he did not want Bro. Walsh's name to it as Prest. Come home.

Zion
There is a land that's far away
A place where God assigns
It's there the wearied Saints can rest
And a stranger safety finds
Tis there the prophets has foretold
The house of God shall be
On mountain tops above the hills
That all the world may see
Chorus
Tis a favoured country deny it who can
For Zion's the home of an honest man
[262]
2
The law from Zion shall go forth
It long has been foretold,
To teach the nations of the Earth
And save a ruined world
And from Jerusalem shall go
The word of God with might
That men may learn to see and know
In purety and light.
Chorus
Tis a favoured country deny it who can
For Zion's the home of an honest man

Do They Miss Me at Home
1
Do they miss me at home do they miss me;
'Twould be an assurance most dear,
To know that this moment some loved one,
Were saying I wish he was here;
To feel that they group at the fire side,
Were thinking of me as I ran (?),
Oh yes, 'twould be joy beyond measure,
To know that they miss me at home.
2
When twilight approaches the season,
That ever a secret to song,
Does some me repet (?) my name over,
And sight that I tarry so long,
And is there a chord in the music,
That's missed when my voice is away,
And a chord in each heart that awake
Regreth [sic] at my wearisome stay.
[264]
3
Do they set me a chair near the table,
When evenings homes pleasures are nigh,
When the candles are lit in the parlor,
And the stars in the calm azure sky;
And when their "good nights" are repeated,
And all lay them down to their sleep,
Do they think of their absence and waft me,
A whispered "good night" while they weep.
4
Do they miss me at home, at home do they miss me
At morning at noon or at night,
And lingers me (?) gloomy shade round them,
That only my presence can blight,
Are joys less invitingly welcome,
And pleasures less hale (?) than before,
Because one is missed from the circle,
Because I am with them no more.
[265]
Answer to Miss Me at Home
1
Yes we miss thee at home, yes we miss thee
Since the hour that we bid the adieu,
And prayers have increled(?) thy pathway,
From anxious hearts loving and true,
That the Saviour would guide and protect you,
As far from the loved ones you roam,
And whisper when ere thou art saddened,
We miss thee all miss thee at home.
2
When twilight awakes us from slumber
We catch from its lips the first kiss,
And wish in a wandering zephyr,
Love wafted to him whom we miss.
And when we surround our home circle,
We still place the vacant chair
While each eye is bedewed with a tear drop
For him we would wish to be there.
[266]
3
The shadows of evening are falling
Oh, where is the wander[er] now
The breeze that flows lightly around us,
Per chance may soon reveal his brow,
Oh bear on thy bosom a message,
Oh when will the wanderer come
The heart has grown sad and dejected
We miss thee all miss thee at home.

Cottage by the Sea
1
Childhood's day now pass before me,
Forms and sea??ns of long ago,
Like a dream they hover o'er me,
Calm and bright as evening's glow,
Days that knew no shade or sorrow,
When my young heart pure and free,
Joyful hailed, each coming morrow,
In the cottage by the sea.
2
Fancy sees the rose tree twining,
Around the old and rustic door,
And below the white beach shining,
Where I gathered shells of yore,
Hears my gently Mother's warning,
As she took me on her knee,
And I feel again life's morning,
In the cottage by the sea.
[268]
3
What through years have rolled above me,
Though mid f??rer seams I roam,
Yet I ne'er shall cease to love thee
Childhood's dear and happy home.
And when life's long day is closing,
Oh how pleasant would it be,
On same faithful breast reposing,
In the cottage by the sea.

Speak No Ill
Robert Owen, vocalist
Never spake no ill ??? a kindly word,
Can never leave a sting behind,
And ho(?) to breath each tale were heard,
As far beneath a noble mind;
For often a better seed is sown,
By choosing this the better plan,
If there's but little good we knew
Let's speak of all the best we can.
2
Give me the heart that feign would hide,
Would hide another's faulty place,
How can it pleasure human's pride
To prove humanity but race
May let us seek a higher mode
A nobler estimate of man
Be earnest in the search for good
And speak of all the best we can.
[270]
3
Ne'er spake no ill but lenient be,
To another's failings as your own,
If you are the first a fault to see,
Be not the first to make it known.
For life is but a passing day,
No lip can tell how brief the span,
Then lo the little while we stay,
Let's speak of all the best we can.
